I recently downloaded noroot firewall for my android to block covert background data transfers, and Relay has a lot of it (Possible explanation for recent concerns of battery-draining by Relay)
First of all, this app is amazing. Everybody should get it. You can see all interactions with all IPs on your internet connection through the phone, and block or allow them as well (even ones that you otherwise cannot block at all, like built-in apps that you'd probably prefer to keep silent and not communicate your data).
In the past 10 minutes Relay has made over 40 different data communications from my IP to various others, not having anything to do with my browsing. Most of them are under names like […amazonaws.com], which as far as I know is a type of cloud storage product through Amazon. I have also seen a couple that were to be sent to IP addresses under facebook.com, which is disappointing, yet Ive noticed a number of apps sell off data to Facebook so maybe this is another one of those instances. Luckily, all of these have been blocked. Since I've started typing this, Relay has attempted to execute 14 data communications to one of their cloud storage devices. This could be me being uneducated and paranoid, but frankly the app operates normally when I block these peripheral communications. My battery life has improved pretty decently since using this app, but I will focus on the fact that I believe this is a huge notation to the battery usage people have been seeing with Relay. I think theyre sending a lot of our data for the obvious purposes. I just wanted to let everybody know that I've noticed this and can validate that there are concerning reasons for the amount of battery usage this app has been using for a lot of us, and Id also like to share this awesome solution. I haven't noticed any change in internet speed while this app is activated, but basically it bypasses the inability to control your cellular network traffic by setting up a VPN on your phone and using that to give you control over your network. It's simply as amazing as it sounds, you will not believe the apps that are buzzing data back and forth on your phone In the background (and how often being sent to facebook), even when your background data is supposed to be disabled ("Google services" attempts to send a communication every 10 seconds, literally). I love this app and will not be switching to any other, but I would advise everybody to get this app, learn how to use it and form custom builds for allowed traffic on apps you use often, especially relay. Hopefully this helps with battery-draining issues, I cant say how much battery life I've saved from performing these actions with Relay alone, as I've turned it on and been using it for all apps, but it's definitely gotta be involved. So please, anybody, if you have any more information concerning this Id love to hear it and if anybody has any questions or wants to see a screenshots of the dozens of different IPs that relay has been communicating with in the background Id be happy to share. I just want to learn more about this and also help anybody who's been having issues with the app draining power.
Also, Id like to add in a cool note that with this you are also able to cut off data communications that are executed with the intention to use your data to target ads to your IP. Most accept this as a necessary evil when using apps and services for free, but it's totally possible to block those type of communications, which I'm sure Relay is engaging in for most of these background uploads.
